Chapter 7

Holden avoided Finn right up until the pack left. He didn’t even bother to say goodbye. One moment everyone was there, carrying out bags and supplies for the run with the nearby pack and the next she was alone left only with the command to keep her door shut and locked. Holden hadn’t even given it to her, instead he sent Enna to tell her as if she might take the news more kindly from another woman. Holden took off first, never even glancing back at her before he did.

This only cemented the fact, in Finn’s head, that the kiss had been a fluke. Maybe she had hypnotized him into doing it… Or a witch[L192], because these things had to exist if vampires and werewolves did, had spelled him into loving her for one night. [L193]Someone in the pack might be a witch! She thought of all kinds of crazy scenarios to explain away the affair without ever touching on the truth. She couldn’t, and wouldn’t, believe that he was genuinely interested in her; just torn by his sense of duty to the pack.

Her naivety gave her the confidence she needed to pack up the scant few things she had collected in the last fourteen days, before heading back out to the city. She still didn’t know what she was going to do once she got there, but she knew her time was up with the pack. She couldn’t keep living under the thumb of Holden if he wasn’t going to at least talk to her about his plans. Anything would be better than being left confused and uncertain regarding what was going on between them. Even if he just gave her a little to go on it would be better than being left to go mad by her thoughts.

Her imagination was enough to give her all kinds of highs and lows, though none could compete with Holden’s own hot-and-coldness. Little did Finn know they were nothing more than two star struck lovers [L194]who couldn’t even fathom the possibility of being together. Each constructed a wall around themselves made of excuses and lies to keep them from the simple possibility of just expressing how they really felt. Everyone around them could see it, but who would have the gall[L195] to tell the alpha of the pack that he was being an idiot and pushing away possibly the only girl who could manage to get under his hardened skin?

So Finn bided her time, keeping to herself in the cabin. She cleaned it, meticulously. She wanted to leave Holden with something that wouldn’t remind him of her. It didn’t occur to her that perhaps he would find ways to remember her. A lingering scent of lilac under the bleach she used to clean the floors, a stray hair that found its way onto his pillow. It didn’t take much to make Holden recall Finn. Sometimes he swore he saw her in places where she couldn’t possibly be. A shimmering mirage between the trees in the warm, afternoon sun.
